Maya Angelou Essay - 1019 Words

Maya Angelou is an American author who is known for her poetry and novels that lyrically illustrate the experiences of African Americans and also acts as a spokesperson for black pride and heritage (St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture). Although she speaks for people of color, her messages of hope and strength appeal to people of all ages and races. Angelou is best known for her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, in which she recalls herself as a young African American girl finding self-confidence in a highly prejudice world. Maya Angelou’s work should still be taught in schools today because of her focus on civil rights and feminism, which continues to be a pressing issue in today’s society. His works in the field of theology were greatly influenced by Aristotle as well as Plato. Even though Anne suffered so much her courage and character only grew stronger. Before Anne Frank went into hiding, she led a blissful and joyous life. She was always surrounded by friends and her family was well to do. She was torn away from her happiness and placed into the harsh and cruel reality of the Nazi agenda at only thirteen years of age. All this only because she was Jewish. She stayed locked up in the attic of the warehouse for almost twenty-five months, never being able to step outside. Such repression and life of fear would make almost any teenager completely depressed and more miserable that words could express. However, Anne managed to keep hope for a better tomorrow and her respect for the human race. Anne made a very powerful statement in her last words. To truly believe such a thing after being abused by the Nazis is quite remarkable indeed. I am very sure that most people, including myself, would have thought that the world was a completely corrupt and humans are naturally cruel if theyd have gone through such times. I believe that Anne has the ability to say such a thing because of her great unselfishness and love for all of G-ds creatures. I also believe that if Anne could have written in her diary after she had gone to the concentration camp, she would have said the exact same thing. Because of her cheerfulness and undying courage, Anne was able to keep up the spirits and the hopes of her family. Her never ending love for all people was fueled by the fact that she would never let anyones cruelty and power bring her spirits to the ground. Through all her suffering Annes character only became stronger and more determined. .

Great Gatsby Thesis Fitzgeralds dominant theme in The Great Gatsby focuses on the corruption of the American Dream. By analyzing high society during the1920s through the eyes of narrator Nick Carraway, the author reveals that the American Dream has transformed from a pure ideal of security into a convoluted scheme of materialistic power. In support of this message, Fitzgerald highlights the original aspects as well as the new aspects of the American Dream in his tragic story to illustrate that a once impervious dream is now lost forever to the American people. The foundation qualities of the American Dream depicted in The Great Gatsby are perseverance and hope. The most glorified of these characteristics is that of success against is that of success against all odds. The ethic of hard work can be found in the life of young James Gatz, whose focus on becoming a great a man is carefully documented in his Hopalong Cassidy journal. When Mr. Gatz shows the tattered book to Nick, he declares, Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always has some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what hes got about improving his mind? He was always great for that (Fitzgerald, pg 182). The journal portrays the continual struggle for self-improvement, which has defined the image of America as a land of opportunity. Members of lower statuses constantly suppose that their problems will be resolved if they gain enough wealth to reach the upper class. Many interpret the American dream as being this passage to high social status and once reaching that point, not having to concern about money at all. Though, the American Dream involves more than the social and economic standings of an individual. The dream involves attaining a balance between the spiritual strength and the physical strength of an individual.(Lehan, pg.53) Jay Gatsby fails to reach his ultimate dream of love for Daisy in that he chooses to pursue it by engaging in a lifestyle of high class. Gatsby realizes that life of the high-class demands wealth to become priority; wealth becomes his superficial goal overshadowing his quest for love. He establishes his necessity to acquire wealth, which allows him to be with Daisy. The social elite of Gatsbys time sacrifice morality in order to attain wealth. Tom Buchanan, a man from an enormously wealthy family, seems to Nick to have lost all sense of being kind.(Lehan, pg.60) Nick describes Toms physical attributes as a metaphor for his true character when remarking that Tom had a hard mouth and a supercilious mannerarrogant eyes has established dominance over his facealways leaning aggressively forwarda cruel bodyhis speaking voiceadded to the impression of fractiousness he conveyed (Lehan, p.61) The product of hard work is the wistful Jay Gatsby, who epitomizes the purest characteristics of the American Dream: everlasting hope. His burning desire to win Daisys love symbolizes the basis of the old dream: an ethereal goal and a never-ending search for the opportunity to reach that goal. Gatsby is first seen late at night, standing with his hands in his pockets and supposedly out to determine what share is his of our local heavens (Fitzgerald, pg25). Nick watches Gatsbys movements and comments: -He stretches out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and as far as I am from him I can swear he is trembling. Involuntarily I glance seaward-and distinguish nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might be the end of the dock. (Fitzgerald, pg.25) Gatsbys goal gives him a purpose in life and sets him apart from the rest of the upper class. He is constantly striving to reach Daisy; from the moment he is seen reaching towards her house in East Egg to the final days of is life, patiently waiting outside Daisys house for hours when she has already decided to abandon her affair with him. This process is also used to ensure medical staff quality monitoring in an HCO. The HCO can validate the caregiver’s competence and proficiency through credentialing. The competence is validated by examining the knowledge and skill obtained through formal education and experience, which is regulated by, licensure and certification bodies while the proficiency is validated by examining the evidence that the clinician’s education and experience are current (White 101). The role of medical staff, management and governance in the credentialing process The role of the medical staff is to meet all the credentialing and re-credentialing criteria. This entails obtaining valid credentials that include licenses and certificates issued by the government. This is usually after a certain level of education, training or experience is attained. In addition, the medical staff has an obligation to provide treatment by practicing good medicine within their training, experience and the capabilities. The role of the management is to verify the validity of all the certificates and licenses issued by the medical staff. This verification process focuses on the medical school, internship and residency completion, board certification, work history and criminal history. The role of governance in credentialing is to set and monitor both the credentialing criteria and process. After the process, the governance grants the professional privileges to the medical staff, which allows them to participate in the physician organization. Describe the differences, duties and key points of management versus governance in an HCO. The difference between the management and the governance of an HCO is that the governance deals with strategic duties of the HCO while the management deals with operational duties of the HCO. That is the governance is responsible for policymaking, decision making and providing oversight for the HCO while the management is responsible for the operational leadership in organizational activities such as financing of the HCO (White 107). The duties of governance include mission and strategic planning, monitoring and assessment of the HCO’s progress, making strategic decisions, executive management, offering financial oversight and providing strategic protection of the HCO from risks. An example of governance performing a task in an HCO, is when the governing board establishes a senior management compensation program that reviews compensation and bonuses for all managers On the other hand, the duties of management include providing fact base for all goal setting and decision-making activities of the governance, financial management of the HCO, human resource management, marketing and internal consultation (White 108). The key points in governance are that governance is responsible for the strategic activities of the HCO. These strategic activities include policymaking, decision making and providing oversight. The key points in management are that the management is responsible for the operational activities of the HCO. These activities include operational management and goal achievement activities. Discuss the expectations and cultural issues with today’s recently graduated physicians and how an HCO can recruit/retain them. Studies have suggested that recently graduated physicians may have different expectations from the preexisting ones that may influence their decision to leave or remain in a community (White 194). Some of the factors that may influence their decision include the collaborative nature of the practice, the organizational culture of the institution and the political environment. The HCO can retain them by using incentives, theories of interpersonal relations like the Peplau’s theory and the application of other organizational behavior theories (White 195). These methods can help the employees understand and appreciate the existing organizational culture. Discuss how an HCO monitors and improves quality. The governance board and the senior management are responsible for monitoring of the quality of health care (White 115). For instance, excellent HCOs that operate under the evidence-based management systems have the ability to retain an accountability hierarchy that aids in monitoring of performance. Improving of the quality of health care is accomplished by research conducted by the ethics committee. This ethics committee is complimented by an institutional review board, which monitors and approves research protocols for involving patients or associates. It is through this research and continuous assessment that health care is improved (White 169). Discuss various external and internal factors affecting HCOs today and explain how the organization can successfully deal with them. One internal factor facing Health care organizations is bad organizational culture. This includes interpersonal relationships, training material, philosophical statements and organizational policies. Bad organizational culture often affects an organization’s productivity by weakening the internal communication links. This can be solved by establishing a good organizational culture that enables the employees to identify with the goals and missions of the organization. Another internal factor is unethical management practices that affect the operational activities of the HCO. These unethical activities include mismanagement of funds, which affect the operating costs of the organization. The HCO can deal with the unethical management practices by formulating an ethics committee whose primary goal is identifying and dealing with unethical management practices (White 65). In addition, technological change is also a factor affecting the HCOs. The increased revolution of technology and its integration into the processes of HCO is a new phenomenon that requires the readjustment of the attitude of the HCO. However, this can be managed by properly preparing the employees for the technological change after critical assessment of the change by the management. An example of an external factor is the presence of strict legislative requirements. The presence of new legislations presents with it drastic changes in patient information disclosure, documentation and record keeping systems. The HCOs can successfully deal with the new legislations by revising their policies and organizational structures to satisfy the provisions by law. Another example of an external factor affecting HCO’s is the increasing diversity among population in the community served which is further supplemented by staff shortages. There has been an increase in the demand for medical care from the community with very little personnel to satisfy the supply. However, this issue can be dealt with by practicing better recruitment and retention practices that ensure there are adequate and qualified personnel. What makes up the well-managed community hospital? A well-managed community hospital is a hospital that has the ability to recruit and satisfy the needs of the medical practitioners while at the same time meet the needs of their local patients at manageable costs. This implies that the hospital is capable of providing financial resources, human resources such as nurse and physicians and any other resources that are necessary to meet the needs of the locals in the community. The factors that characterize such a hospital include a well-defined organizational culture that promotes shared values, empowers associates, supports service excellence and encourages success (White 39). Another factor is a strong cultural, operational and strategic foundation, which enable high performance (White 14). This is usually supplemented by a well-defined operational leadership system that is accountable and sustains improvement in the operational structure (White 69). It should have foundations on clinical performance that ensure accurate diagnosis, excellent care, good implementation of protocols, individualization of patient care, good planning and treatment, improved community health and improved clinical performance (White 141). This should be supported by clinical support services that are responsible for providing excellent health care (White 250). Finally, it should have a human resource management system that is aimed at workforce planning, work force development, workforce maintenance, workforce empowerment and workforce compensation (White 346). The ratio of midwives and women who were knowledgeable in midwifery to the general population was higher compared to the past decade. Most middle aged women had experience in midwifery having assisted in child delivery of a family member of a friend. At the time, home birth was considered reasonably safe and without concerns of overcrowding and fatigue. NCT (2008) continues to state that, â€Å"Trends gradually changed in the 1970’s towards the 80’s as hospital births increased in frequency and numbers. By the 1990’s home births had reduced significantly to about 1% (p.2).† In recent times this percentage has increased to 2.68% as popularity and campaigns for home births have increased. ACOG (2011) notes that â€Å"Most governments require that recommendations be made to pregnant women to have a choic e of their desired place of birthing.† A medical professional can evaluate and examine a pregnant woman and suggest a place of birth for the woman explaining his or her recommendation based on medical grounds to her. The key factors to be considered when choosing between home birth and hospital birth are the safety of the procedure, the sense of security of the mother and the level or sense of control. According to ACOG (2011), â€Å"Women who inquire on planned home births at medical facilities should be adequately informed of its benefits and possible risks.† This information should be based on current and documented evidence. The advising party should clearly note to the mother that although the possible risks associated with home birth may be minimal, home birth is closely associated with increased risk of neo natal death. The risk of neo natal death is two to three fold that of hospital birth. To achieve a successful and reduced-risk planned home birth, the woman r equires selecting suitable candidates for the home birth. â€Å"A nurse certified in midwifery, physician or midwife who is qualified and aptly practices within regulations set by the local medical body should be available† (ACOG, 2011). The intended candidate should also be available for consultations. Safe, easy and timely access to a hospital or medical facility should be possible at the slightest chance of complications occurring. An easy access to hospital should provide contingency in case complications develops and the mother and or infant require emergency medical attention. ACOG (2011) states, â€Å"At present, the United States records an approximate figure of 25,000 home births annually.† From this figure, a quarter of the births is not attended to and is unplanned due to the spontaneity or unexpected labor. On average, the fraction of women who initially plan and intend to deliver at a hospital, those women who fail to make provisions for the attendance of a certified medical professional in midwifery, and unplanned homebirths record high rates and instances of neo natal and pre natal deaths. Women should plan for any eventuality and sudden changes in original or intended plans. The lack of transport to the designated/ planned hospital may warrant a home birth.
